Free online Grade Calculator
Three simple steps
- Enter the points you earned.
- Enter the total possible points; it must be greater than zero.
- Read the percentage and the letter grade on the clearly labelled example scale.
Understand your result
This tool converts a score into a percentage. Its letter grade is an illustrative example, because grading rules vary between schools, courses, and countries.
Worked example
You earned 42 points out of 50. Divide 42 by 50 and multiply by 100: 84%. On this calculator’s sample scale, 84% is B. Another example: 87 out of 100 is 87%, which is B+.
The sample letter-grade scale
| Grade | Percentage |
|---|---|
| A+ | 97% and above |
| A / A− | 93% / 90% and above |
| B+ / B / B− | 87% / 83% / 80% and above |
| C+ / C / C− | 77% / 73% / 70% and above |
| D+ / D / D− | 67% / 63% / 60% and above |
| F | Below 60% |
The raw percentage determines the band. The displayed percentage may be rounded, so a value just below a boundary does not automatically move to the next grade.
What this does and doesn’t calculate
The formula is earned points ÷ possible points × 100. Scores above the total are allowed for extra-credit calculations. This is a single-score calculator: it does not combine differently weighted assignments or calculate the score needed on a future final exam.
Before using an official result
Check your syllabus or institution’s grading policy. An illustrative letter grade here is not an official academic determination.
