How to Calculate Investment Profit and ROI
This calculator measures the result of a single purchase-and-sale transaction. Enter the purchase price per unit, sale price per unit, number of units, purchase expenses and selling expenses. It works for many asset transactions when the underlying agreement is suitable for your circumstances.
- Total purchase cost = (purchase price per unit × units) + purchase fees.
- Net sale proceeds = (sale price per unit × units) − selling fees.
- Net profit or loss = net sale proceeds − total purchase cost.
- ROI (%) = net profit or loss ÷ total purchase cost × 100.
Worked example: investment profit after fees
Buying 10 units at $50 each with $5 purchase expenses costs $505. Selling 10 units at $75 each with $5 selling expenses leaves $745 in proceeds. The net gain is $240, giving an ROI of approximately 47.52%. The calculator displays a loss when proceeds are lower than costs.
Profit amount vs. ROI percentage
Profit measures the money gained or lost in your chosen currency; ROI compares that amount with the total purchase cost. Two trades can earn the same money but have different ROI percentages because their starting costs differ.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate investment profit after fees?
Subtract your total purchase cost, including buying fees, from the proceeds after selling fees. The calculator uses all five amounts you enter.
What is the ROI formula?
ROI (%) = (net proceeds − total cost) ÷ total cost × 100. Total cost must be greater than zero.
Can this investment profit calculator show a loss?
Yes. If the net sale proceeds are less than the purchase cost, both the profit figure and ROI percentage are negative.
Can I calculate stock or other asset trades?
You can calculate a simple trade using units, buy and sell prices, and transaction fees. This is not a dedicated dividends, tax, or multi-trade portfolio tool.
Are dividends and annualized returns included?
No. The present calculator does not have a dividend field, holding-period input, or annualized return calculation.
Does the calculator include taxes or currency conversion?
No. Enter amounts in one consistent currency. Choosing a currency changes the displayed unit, not the exchange rate or tax rules.
Does this determine whether an investment is halal?
No. It calculates arithmetic profit or loss without interest. The permissibility of a trade depends on its asset, financing, ownership, contract and business practices.
Is this investment calculator free?
Yes. It runs in your browser without an account; the calculated numbers are illustrative and not a recommendation.

Costs, Assumptions and Related Calculators
Results rely on the values you enter and do not predict future prices, dividends, capital gains taxes, exchange-rate movements, or future investment growth. If the entered selling value is a hypothetical price, the result is a scenario, not a realized profit. A positive ROI does not describe risk or guarantee that a similar trade will succeed.
